MUST READ: 25 Body Hacks to Supercharge Yourself #lijfhacking #bodyhacks #4hb

interessant artikel over #lijfhacking:

=========================================================

25 Body Hacks to Supercharge Yourself

A body hack is a usable technique that can make an improvement to improve a person's life, health or mental state. These techniques are generally learned through real-life experience and are not necessarily medically recognized. Body hacks may work for some people and not for others and the only way to find out is to give them a try. Here are 24 body hacks we probably would be willing to try and one that we definitely wouldn't.

Reset Your Body Clock
Shift workers and travelers may be able to fast and successfully manipulate their body clocks. Research suggests the Circadian rhythm (body clock) is primarily controlled by light, but the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) has its own power and influence over the body clock, which allows this body hack to work.
The SCN may be controlled through eating habits. It transfers messages to the dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (DMH), which makes decisions about when a person is awake and when they should be sleeping.

Dr. Clifford Saper, MD, MS, PhD, who is Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School predicts that humans can reset their body clocks by fasting and eating at different than normal times.

Saper's research found that when animals were deprived of food, their body clocks adjusted to a new pattern so they could be awake when food became available. By fasting for 16 hours prior to a a trip and eating if they were in the destination's time zone, travelers may avoid jetlag. Shift workers may also benefit from reseting their body clocks in this manner as their shifts change.

Sleep Less
Developing a polyphasic sleep schedule means sleep is distributed in regularly scheduled blocks around the clock, with the sum of all periods of sleep being less than a regular night's sleep. Some popular polyphasic sleep schedules include the "Everyman," which is one three hour block of sleep and three 20-minute naps per 24 hours, the "Uberman," which is six 20 minute naps per 24 hours and the "Dymaxion," which is four thirty minute naps per 24 hours. People who need more waking hours may find the polyphasic sleep schedule works for them.

Become an Early Riser
If you would like to start getting up earlier in the morning, it's best to start off waking up a few minutes earlier for a few days, allowing yourself to get used to the change before changing to an even earlier time. Gradually wake up earlier every few days until you are waking up at the target time. Going to bed earlier, placing the alarm clock far from the bed and resolving not to go back to bed after getting up can help you get a good start as a new early riser.

Get Better Sleep
As a neuroscience major at Princeton, Tim Feriss researched sleep deprivation and has experimented with sleep optimization for increased performance for the last ten years. Feriss recommends consuming 150-250 calories of low-glycemic foods, like yogurt or an apple, before bedtime. This bedtime snack can combat morning fatigue and headaches from low blood sugar through the night. Adding 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil to the bedtime snack can also help decrease fatigue and increase cel repair.
Feriss also tested the effects of a 10-minute ice bath an hour before bedtime in combination with a low dose of melatonin. He says the effect is like being hit with an elephant tranquilizer and may not be pleasant.

His research also found a set eating schedule can help regulate melatonin, ghrelin, leptin, and other hormones that affect sleep cycles.

Solve Problems in Your Sleep
Researchers say that you have the ability to problem-solve in your sleep because most memory consolidation occurs while your brain is in a resting state. Studies have shown that people who review material right before bedtime have a better chance of remembering the material and solving problems they viewed. If you are studying for a test or preparing a presentation, your best bet is to do it right before bed so that the material is more likely to be stored as long-term memory.

Stop the TearsCrying in public can be inconvenient and very embarrassing, but there are things you can do to stop the flow of tears. Holding your eyes wide open without blinking can often stop tears from starting. If you have already started to cry, look upward with your eyes without tilting your head back to stop the tears. Relaxing your jaw may also help hold back the tears, but if that doesn't work you might try gently biting your tongue to re-direct your attention to a slight physical pain until the emotional pain subsides.

Stifle Inappropriate Laughter
Inappropriate laughter can be embarrassing and contagious. If you are in a situation in which a bout of laughter would be frowned upon you can prepare by thinking of something sad to kill the urge to laugh. If you still find yourself wanting to laugh inappropriately, you can distract yourself with a physical sensation by pinching yourself, biting your tongue or holding your breath. If you still burst out in laughter, despite doing everything possible to stop it, you can attempt to disguise your laughter as a coughing fit and step into a restroom to compose yourself. Exhale as much air as you can from your lungs to stop laughing, count backwards, put on a straight face and return to the party or gathering.

How to Cure Hiccups
There are several methods people use to cure themselves of hiccups. None are medically proven and success may vary greatly from one person to another. Some people are able to stop hiccups by holding their breath for as long as possible before exhaling slowly. If that doesn't work, sometimes the drinking method is successful. For the drinking method, a person plugs their ears with their fingers while plugging their nose with other fingers. With the remaining fingers, the person picks up a 12 ounce glass of water (using only their lips and jaw muscles) and drinks as much as they can, as fast as they can. Other possible remedies include breathing into a paper bag, suffering a fright, immersing your face in ice-water for 30 seconds or swallowing a teaspoon of dry, white granulated sugar.

Be a Human Lie Detector
You can be a human lie detector just by picking up on somewhat subtle details about a person's behavior. Crossed arms are a signal indicating the need for self-preservation or a block against the issue being discussed. When a person is lying, the speed and pitch of their voice will often change and they may stutter, stammer and/or avoid eye contact. Nervous twitches or less obvious shifts in body-position may also be a clue that a person is lying.

Prevent a Hangover
There are often consequences after a night of alcoholic indulgence. Luckily, a hangover is one of those consequences you can take measures to prevent. When you consume alcohol, the ethanol increases prostaglandin formation, depletes B vitamins and magnesium, and depletes usable glucose for the brain. The basic result: You may be in a shitty mood and feel fatigued and groggy.
Taking N-Acetylcysteine before a night of drinking may help prevent some hangover symptoms. This drug is generally used for treatment of paracetamol overdose, but can also scavenge the toxins that ethanol produces in the body. It is not recommended that you take N-Acetylcysteine after a night of drinking.

Taking B-complex and folic acid after consuming alcohol can help prevent a hangover by replacing what the ethanol depleted in your body.

Staying hydrated can also go a long way towards preventing a hangover. If you drink Gatorade or Pedialite, you also replace magnesium and electrolytes and give your brain some needed glucose. The same trick has been discovered by thousands of people who noticed that a Vodka-Redbull somehow manages to both intoxicate them, and stave off a hangover as well.

Stop or Force a Sneeze
Many times you can't stop a sneeze, nor should you try if you have already started to sneeze. A sneeze pushes air out of the mouth and nose at speeds of up to 100 mph. However, if you feel a sneeze coming on and want to stop it before it starts, pressing your tongue firmly behind your teeth may help. You can also try tickling the roof of your mouth with your tongue or pinching the tip of your nose to stop the sneeze sensation. If you feel a sneeze coming on and want to get it over with, looking onto a bright light can induce sneezing.

Ease a Toothache
If you have a toothache and can't see a dentist right away, you can ease the pain without even opening your mouth. By rubbing an ice cube on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger on the back of your hand you can reduce the toothache pain by as much as 50 percent. At the base of the webbed V there are nerve pathways that stimulate an area of the brain to block pain signals from the face and hands.

Improve Your Memory with the Link Method
Memory can be improved by developing a recall technique called the Link Method. This method helps you remember and recall information by associating it with a word or story that you can visualize in your mind. When trying to memorize a list of items or facts, a combination of word association and a story form is effective. By associating the items you are memorizing with familiar things and linking them together a memorable story is formed. Storing the information in your brain this way allows for easy recall later.

Improve Your Vision
For a temporary vision improvement, you can curl your hand into a fist and look through it as you would a telescope. This trick allows only a narrow beam of light to reach the retina and increases the depth of field and focus.

Dilate or Shrink Your Pupils at Will
The study of pupilometrics, or the relationship between human emotions and the size of the pupils, has revealed that the size of a person's pupils can be controlled. Some people are able to dilate their pupils by tensing their stomach muscles, picturing something that gives them an adrenaline rush or focusing on objects that nearby. To decrease pupil size, increase the amount of light, relax the stomach muscles while keeping the pelvis and hips aligned with the shoulders and focus on an object at a greater distance.

Stop Brain Freeze
Sometimes eating ice cream or drinking a frozen drink can cause the very unpleasant "brain freeze" effect. To combat brain freeze, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth. The more pressure you are able to apply with your tongue, the faster relief will come.

Improve Your Hearing
If you are having trouble hearing what someone is saying, try turning your right ear to the conversation. Your right ear is better at picking up speech patterns.
If you're stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine say your right ear is better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. For music, the opposite is left ear.

Clear Your Sinuses
If you have sinus congestion and steam just isn't doing the trick, there's another body hack you can try to relieve the pressure. Thrust your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then press between your eyebrows. Repeating these two things rocks your vomer bone back and forth and loosens up the congestion, allowing your sinuses to drain.

Avoid Side Stitches
During or after a run, some people will occasionally get a "side stitch." This pain in the side is generally a product of exhaling as the right foot hits the ground, thus putting downward pressure on the liver and causing it to pull on the diaphragm. To avoid side stitches, exhale as your left foot hits the ground during runs.

Prevent Acid Reflux
If you frequently suffer from acid reflux at night, you may find relief is as simple as sleeping on your left side. If you sleep on your right side, your stomach is higher than your esophagus, which allows gravity to promote acid reflux. By sleeping on your left side, you position your stomach lower than your esophagus and have gravity on your side to keep food and acid in your stomach.

Improve Your Posture
The correct way to improve your posture is not to force yourself to sit up straight. Forcing yourself to have good posture is counterproductive and will fatigue your muscles and cause soreness. To properly correct your posture, work on exercises that strengthen the muscles around your shoulder blades and mid-back and your posture will automatically improve.

Circular Breathing
A technique called circular breathing allows some musicians of wind instruments to produce sound without interruption. When practicing circular breathing, the person breathes in through the nose while exhaling through the mouth. Air is stored in the cheeks so that there is a continuous supply. Saxophonist Kenny G previously held the world record of 45 minutes for continuous play of a wind instrument, however Costa Rican saxophonist Geovanny Escalante now holds the world record of almost 90 minutes.

Hold Your Breath Longer
You can hold your breath underwater for about 10 seconds longer if you hyperventilate before diving down. When you are underwater, usually the buildup of carbon dioxide makes your blood acidic, which triggers your brain to let you know something's wrong. By taking several short breaths before going underwater, you fool your brain into thinking it has more oxygen and have more time before alarm bells go off.

Boost Your Car Remote with Your Head
If you forget where you parked and your key remote signal is not strong enough to help you find the car, there is a simple trick to amplify the signal and increase your chances of easily finding it. Simply place the remote under your chin, open your mouth and press the button. Your oral cavity will amplify the signal and with any luck, you'll locate your car immediately.

Honderden vrijwilligers ontplooien tientallen initiatieven in veertien Nederlandse gemeenten

Honderden vrijwilligers ontplooien tientallen initiatieven in veertien Nederlandse gemeenten

Gemeenten

the 4-hour body slow carb diet setup #4hb #lijfhack

i'm a huge fan of tim ferriss' new bestseller called the 4-hour body full of tips, tricks and bodyhacks.

yesterday i stumbled upon a nice article about the setup of the 4-hour body slow carb diet i thought you might find interesting too.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tim Ferriss has tried a lot of diets. Here's one that he thinks is the best. And it is pretty easy to follow.

How to Lose 20 Pounds in 30 Days Without Exercise

Out of clutter, find simplicity. -Albert Einstein

11:34 A.M. SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2009, SAN FRANCISCO

Text message from London, eight hours ahead, meant to impress:
This is my dinner. Happy times!
The accompanying photo: a pepperoni and sausage pizza so large it doesn't fit on the screen.
Chris A., a fellow experimenter, and I were having our weekly virtual date.
Text response from me:
This is my breakfast. BREAKFAST. Can you hear the insulin pouring out of my eyes? Woohoo! Ante up, fat boy.
My accompanying photo: two bear claws, two chocolate croissants, grapefruit juice, and a large
coffee.
Response from Chris:
LOL . . . please don't make me do this . . .
And so it continued, a text-message eating contest. The truth is, I do some version of this every Saturday, and thousands of people over the last four years have joined me in doing the same. In between pizzas and bear claws, the net result is that the average follower has lost 19 pounds of fat, and a surprising number have lost more than 100 pounds total. This odd approach has produced something of a small revolution. Let me explain exactly how Chris and I reach and maintain sub-12% body fat, often sub-10%, by strategically eating like pigs.

The Slow-Carb Diet-Better Fat-Loss Through Simplicity

It is possible to lose 20 pounds of body fat in 30 days by optimizing any of three factors: exercise, diet, or a drug/supplement regimen. Twenty pounds for most people means moving down at least two clothing sizes, whether that's going from a size 14 dress to a size 10 or from an XXL shirt to a large. The waist and hips show an even more dramatic reduction in circumference.
By April 6, 2007, as an example, I had cut from nearly 180 pounds to 165 pounds in six weeks, while adding about 10 pounds of muscle, which means I lost approximately 25 pounds of fat. The changes aren't subtle.
The diet that I'll introduce in this chapter-the Slow-Carb Diet-is the only diet besides the rather extreme Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) that has produced veins across my abdomen, which is the last place I lose fat. There are just five simple rules to follow:

RULE 1: AVOID "WHITE" CARBOHYDRATES.

Avoid any carbohydrate that is, or can be, white. The following foods are prohibited, except for within 30 minutes of finishing a resistance-training workout like those described in the "From Geek to Freak" or "Occam's Protocol" chapters: all bread, rice (including brown), cereal, potatoes, pasta, tortillas, and fried food with breading. If you avoid eating the aforementioned foods and anything else white, you'll be safe.
Just for fun, another reason to avoid the whities: chlorine dioxide, one of the chemicals used to bleach flour (even if later made brown again, a common trick), combines with residual protein in most of these foods to form alloxan. Researchers use alloxan in lab rats to induce diabetes. That's right-it's used to produce diabetes. This is bad news if you eat anything white or "enriched."
Don't eat white stuff unless you want to get fatter.

RULE 2: EAT THE SAME FEW MEALS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

The most successful dieters, regardless of whether their goal is muscle gain or fat-loss, eat the same few meals over and over again. There are 47,000 products in the average U.S. grocery store, but only a handful of them won't make you fat.
Mix and match from the following list, constructing each meal with one pick from each of the three groups. I've starred the choices that produce the fastest fat-loss for me:
Proteins
*Egg whites with 1–2 whole eggs for flavor (or, if organic, 2–5 whole eggs, including yolks)
*Chicken breast or thigh
*Black beans
*Beef (preferably grass-fed)
Pork
*Fish
Legumes
*Lentils (also called "dal" or "daal")
Pinto beans
Red beans
Soybeans
Vegetables
*Spinach
*Mixed vegetables (including broccoli, cauliflower, or any other cruciferous vegetables)
*Sauerkraut, kimchee (full explanation of these later in "Damage Control")
Asparagus
Peas
Broccoli
Green beans
Eat as much as you like of the above food items, but keep it simple. Pick three or four meals and repeat them. Almost all restaurants can give you a salad or vegetables in place of french fries, potatoes, or rice.
Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food (after swapping out rice for vegetables) to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the Slow-Carb Diet. If you have to pay an extra $1–3 to substitute at a restaurant, consider it your six-pack tax, the nominal fee you pay to be lean. Most people who go on "low"-carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit because they consume insufficient calories. A half-cup of rice is 300 calories, whereas a half-cup of spinach is 15 calories! Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load.
Eating more frequently than four times per day might be helpful on higher-carb diets to prevent gorging, but it's not necessary with the ingredients we're using. Eating more frequent meals also appears to have no enhancing effect on resting metabolic rate, despite claims to the contrary.
Frequent meals can be used in some circumstances (see "The Last Mile"), but not for this reason.
The following meal schedule is based on a late sleep schedule, as I'm a night owl who gives up the ghost at 2:00 a.m. at the earliest, usually with wineglass or book still in hand, à la heroin addict. Adjust your meals to fit your schedule, but make sure to have your first meal within an hour of waking. Meals are approximately four hours apart.
10:00 am - Breakfast
2:00 pm - Lunch
6:30 pm - Smaller second lunch
8:00–9:00 pm - Recreation or sports training, if scheduled.
10:00 pm - Dinner
12:00 am - Glass of red wine and Discovery Channel before bed
Here are some of my meals that recur again and again:
Breakfast (home): Scrambled Eggology® pourable egg whites with one whole egg, black beans, and mixed vegetables warmed up or cooked in a microwave using Pyrex® containers.
Lunch (Mexican restaurant): Grass-fed organic beef, pinto beans, mixed vegetables, and extra guacamole.
Dinner (home): Grass-fed organic beef (from Trader Joe's), lentils, and mixed vegetables.
Just remember: this diet is, first and foremost, intended to be effective, not fun. It can be fun with a few tweaks (the next chapter covers this), but that's not the goal.

RULE 3: DON'T DRINK CALORIES.

Drink massive quantities of water and as much unsweetened tea, coffee (with no more than two tablespoons of cream; I suggest using cinnamon instead), or other no-calorie/low-calorie beverages as you like. Do not drink milk (including soy milk), normal soft drinks, or fruit juice. Limit diet soft drinks to no more than 16 ounces per day if you can, as the aspartame can stimulate weight gain.
I'm a wine fanatic and have one to two glasses of red wine almost every evening. It doesn't appear to have any negative impact on my rate of fat-loss. Red wine is by no means required for this diet to work, but it's 100% allowed (unlike white wines and beer, both of which should be avoided). Up to two glasses of red per night, no more.

RULE 4: DON'T EAT FRUIT.

Humans don't need fruit six days a week, and they certainly don't need it year-round. If your ancestors were from Europe, for example, how much fruit did they eat in the winter 500 years ago? Think they had Florida oranges in December? Not a chance. But you're still here, so the lineage somehow survived.
The only exceptions to the no-fruit rule are tomatoes and avocadoes, and the latter should be eaten in moderation (no more than one cup or one meal per day). Otherwise, just say no to fruit and its principal sugar, fructose, which is converted to glycerol phosphate more efficiently than almost all other carbohydrates. Glycerol phosphate p triglycerides (via the liver) p fat storage. There are a few biochemical exceptions to this, but avoiding fruit six days per week is the most reliable policy.
But what's this "six days a week" business? It's the seventh day that allows you, if you so desire, to eat peach crepes and banana bread until you go into a coma.

RULE 5: TAKE ONE DAY OFF PER WEEK.

I recommend Saturdays as your Dieters Gone Wild (DGW) day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. If I drank beer, I'd have a few pints of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen.
I make myself a little sick each Saturday and don't want to look at any junk for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat-loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function and conversion of T4 to T3, etc.) doesn't downshift from extended caloric restriction.
That's right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia. There are no limits or boundaries during this day of gluttonous enjoyment. There is absolutely no calorie counting on this diet, on this day or any other.
Start the diet at least five days before your designated cheat day. If you choose Saturday, for example, I would suggest starting your diet on a Monday.
That's All, Folks!
If the founding fathers could sum up our government in a six-page constitution, the above is all we need to summarize rapid fat-loss for 99.99% of the population. Followed to the letter, I've never seen it fail. Never. When you feel mired in details or confused by the latest-and-greatest
contradictory advice, return to this short chapter. All you need to remember is:
Rule 1: Avoid "white" carbohydrates (or anything that can be white).
Rule 2: Eat the same few meals over and over again.
Rule 3: Don't drink calories.
Rule 4: Don't eat fruit.
Rule 5: Take one day off per week and go nuts.

$1.34 PER MEAL?

Andrew Hyde is community director at TechStars, a well-known start-up incubator in Boulder,
Colorado. He is also an Internet-famous big bargain hunter. I use "big" in both the figurative and literal senses: Andrew is 6'5" and 245 pounds. I should say that he was 245 pounds. In his first two weeks on the Slow-Carb Diet, he lost 10 pounds and, perhaps more impressive, racked up incredibly unimpressive costs:
Total per-week food cost: $37.70
Average per-meal cost: $1.34
And this was including organic grass-fed beef! If he'd eaten a big salad three times a week instead of a few proteins, his weekly cost would have been $31.70. He repeated four meals:
BREAKFAST: Egg whites, one whole egg, mixed vegetables, chicken breast Mixed vegetables, peas, spinach (salad)
LUNCH: Mixed vegetables, peas, spinach (salad)
SECOND LUNCH: Chicken thigh, black beans, mixed vegtables
DINNER: Beef (or pork), asparagus, pinto beans
His exact shopping list was simplicity itself. The prices are the per line totals:
1x Eggs (12 pack) $1.20
4x Mixed vegetables (1-lb bags) $6
1x Chicken breast $2
1x Organic peas (2-lb bag) $2
2x Spinach (3-lb bags) $6
3x Chicken thigh $9
2x Grass-fed organic beef (0.5-lb cuts) $4
2x Pork (1-lb cuts) $3
2x Asparagus bundles $2
1x Pinto beans (1-lb bag) $1.50
1x Black beans (1-lb bag) $1
Getting these prices didn't require a degree in negotiation or dozens of hours of searching. Andrew looked for discounted items near expiration date and shopped at smaller stores, including a Mexican grocery store, where he bought all of his dried beans.
Just to restate an important point: Andrew is an active 6'5", 245-pound, 26-year-old male, and he exercised three times a week during his Slow-Carb Diet experiment. He's not a small organism to feed. He's also not unique in his experience.
Though you might not get to $1.34 per meal, his two-week experiment shows what thousands of others have been surprised to learn about the Slow-Carb Diet: it's damn cheap. The myth that eating right is expensive is exactly that: a myth.

THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT: FRUCTOSE

Can fruit juice really screw up fat-loss?
Oh, yes. And it screws up much more. Not to speculate, I tested the effect of fructose in two tests, the first during a no-fructose diet (no juice, no fruit) and the second after one week of consuming 14 ounces-about 1.5 large glasses-of pulp-free orange juice upon waking and before bed. The orange juice was the only thing distinguishing diets A and B. The changes were incredible.
Before (10/16, no fructose) and after (10/23, orange juice):
Cholesterol: 203 -> 243 (out of "healthy" range)
LDL: 127 -> 165 (also out of range)
There were two other values that shot up unexpectedly:
Albumin: 4.3 -> 4.9 (out of range)
Iron: 71 -> 191 (!) (out of range aka into the stratosphere)
Albumin binds to testosterone and renders it inert, much like SHBG (discussed in "Sex Machine") but weaker. I don't want either to be out-of-range high. Bad for the manly arts. If you said "Holy sh*t!" when you saw the iron jump, we're in the same boat. This result was completely out of the blue and is not good, especially in men. It might come as a surprise, but men don't menstruate. This means that men lack a good method for clearing out excessive iron, which can be toxic. The increase in iron was far more alarming to me than the changes in cholesterol.
Here is just one of several explanations from the research literature:
In addition to contributing to metabolic abnormalities, the consumption of fructose has been reported to affect homeostasis of numerous trace elements. Fructose has been shown to increase iron absorption in humans and experimental animals. Fructose intake [also] decreases the activity of the copper enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduces the concentration of serum and hepatic copper.
The moral of the story? Don't drink fruit juice, and absolutely avoid a high-fructose diet. It doesn't do the body good.
